Egg allergy: Nigerian foods to check
Egg shows up in more Nigerian food than people expect, both as a visible ingredient and as a binder or glaze. Because many snacks and baked goods are made by hand without a label, the way to stay safe is to know the usual suspects and ask.

Where egg often hides
These are common patterns, not guarantees. A particular cook or brand may do it differently, so treat each line as a reason to ask.
- Moi moi. A boiled egg is a common addition, and some cooks add raw egg to the batter. Plain bean batter without egg exists, so ask.
- Chin chin, buns and doughnuts. Often made with egg in the dough.
- Puff-puff and pancakes. Recipes vary. Some use egg, some do not.
- Meat pie and sausage roll. The golden glaze is frequently egg wash.
- Fried rice and salads. Egg is often mixed in or on top, and Nigerian salad commonly includes boiled egg and a mayonnaise-style dressing.
- Sauces and spreads. Mayonnaise and salad cream contain egg.
- Scotch eggs, egg rolls and egg sandwiches. Egg is the point of these, and the coating or filling is often bound with more egg.
- Cakes, doughnuts and small chops. Party snacks are usually made in bulk by hand, so ingredients are rarely listed. Ask the person who made them, not the person serving.
Safer starting points
- Akara and plain beans, checked that no egg was added.
- Jollof rice, boiled or roasted plantain, yam or plain rice with stew.
- Home-baked snacks where you control the recipe.
What to ask before you eat
Say that it is an allergy, not a preference. Then ask plainly:
- Is there egg in the batter or dough, or only on top?
- Is the glaze on the pastry egg wash?
- Is the dressing mayonnaise or salad cream?
Tell Fuuud once
In the chat, say it the way you would to a person: “I can't eat eggs, even in baked things”. Fuuud stores one dated line in your own encrypted record:
2026-10-07 | allergy | eggs, including baked goodsFrom then on every meal suggestion is checked against it, and a meal that conflicts is blocked, not just flagged. If you change your mind you can retract the fact in Settings. How the record is kept is explained in how Fuuud keeps your health memory private.
Not medical advice
This is a reading aid, not medical advice. Recipes and ingredients differ by cook, region and brand. If you have a diagnosed allergy or condition, follow your clinician's guidance, read labels, and tell the person serving you that it is an allergy.
Common questions
Is moi moi safe with an egg allergy?
Only if it is made without egg. Many versions include a boiled egg, and some add raw egg to the batter. Ask how it was made, or cook it yourself.
Can I have akara?
Akara is traditionally bean paste fried in oil, usually without egg, but check the recipe and what else is fried in the same oil.
Does egg wash on pastry matter?
Yes. Even when the filling is egg-free, the shiny glaze on meat pies and sausage rolls is commonly egg. If you are strictly avoiding egg, ask about the glaze.
Baked goods may also contain milk or wheat. Check each allergen you have.
