Milk allergy: Nigerian foods to check

Milk is easy to miss when it arrives as a powder, in a hot drink or in a baked snack. A milk allergy is different from lactose intolerance: the first is an immune reaction, the second is about digesting milk sugar, and the advice for each is not the same. Tell Fuuud which one you have.

Where milk often hides

These are common patterns, not guarantees. A particular cook or brand may do it differently, so treat each line as a reason to ask.

  • Pap (ogi, akamu) and custard. Usually served with milk and sugar, often evaporated or powdered milk.
  • Tea and hot drinks. Milk powder or evaporated milk is added by default in many places.
  • Nono, fura da nono and yoghurt. Fermented milk drinks and products.
  • Wara. Soft local cheese, made from milk.
  • Bread, buns and chin chin. Milk powder is a common ingredient in dough.
  • Ice cream, creamy sauces and some stews. Cream or milk is sometimes used to finish a dish.
  • Cereals, oats and instant mixes. Breakfast cereals, instant oats and drink powders often contain milk solids. The pack will say, so read it before you add anything.
  • Cakes, puff-puff mixes and party snacks. Made in bulk and rarely labelled. Powdered milk is a common ingredient in the dough, so ask the person who made it.

Safer starting points

  • Pap made with water, with sugar or honey to taste, if you have no other allergy to worry about.
  • Plant drinks such as oat or soy, if soy and the other ingredients suit you.
  • Plain rice, yam, beans, plantain and stews made with oil.

What to ask before you eat

Say that it is an allergy, not a preference. Then ask plainly:

  • Is milk powder or evaporated milk added to this?
  • Does the bread or snack list milk, or can you check the pack?
  • Is it made with butter or cream?

Tell Fuuud once

In the chat, say it the way you would to a person: “I'm allergic to cow's milk, not just lactose”. Fuuud stores one dated line in your own encrypted record:

2026-10-07 | allergy | cow's milk (allergy, not lactose intolerance)

From then on every meal suggestion is checked against it, and a meal that conflicts is blocked, not just flagged. If you change your mind you can retract the fact in Settings. How the record is kept is explained in how Fuuud keeps your health memory private.

Not medical advice

This is a reading aid, not medical advice. Recipes and ingredients differ by cook, region and brand. If you have a diagnosed allergy or condition, follow your clinician's guidance, read labels, and tell the person serving you that it is an allergy.

Common questions

Is lactose-free milk safe if I am allergic to milk?

No. Lactose-free milk still contains milk protein. Allergy needs a different approach from intolerance.

Does butter count?

Butter contains small amounts of milk protein, so for an allergy treat it as milk unless your clinician says otherwise.

What about goat or camel milk?

The proteins are similar enough that people allergic to cow's milk often react to them too. Do not switch without your clinician's advice.

Many packaged snacks that contain milk also contain wheat or egg.
